Loving and affectionate sister-in-law of Mangai Muthiah, Nadarajah, Parasakthi Muthiah, Rathinasabapathy (Kunchaiah) and  Sarvaluxmy (Kunchamma) ( all deceased )

Amma has been affectionately known as ‘Pushpi’ by her class mates at Chundikuli Girls College, Baba/Baba acca ( ‘Baakka’) by her siblings, ‘Machchal’ by her  in-laws, Baba anta/Baba mami or periamma by her nieces and nephews, and ‘Pushpa’ by her Aussie friends. Thus she is fondly remembered and will be missed by many across the globe. Her loss would deprive us all, of her great love and care that she endowed on many including her generosity towards the community.

She was a great care-giver and loved to cook. From a young age, she played a pivotal role in the development of her younger siblings, then chose to raise 8 children instead of an English teaching career, nurtured various young extended family members in her own house and went on to rear many of her grandchildren. Her life-long dedication to the nurturing and mentorship of others is truly unmatched.

Amma has been cared for by WinLanka Care Home Pvt. Ltd at Nugegoda for nearly 4 years. WinLanka care provision had been exceptional; particular staff member that amma became attached to was Jayantha. Special gratitude go to Dr.Radha and Dr.Madhuka who were receptive and responsive to family’s wishes in treatment decisions. Our family are extremely blessed for the significant input over the last year from Madu, a younger woman, who amma referred to as ‘Aachi’ fondly and came to rely heavily on. Madu became a ‘family member’ to the Sabaratnam family because of her dedication to the care she provided like a daughter, until amma’s last breath.

Please accept the obituary from the Sabaratnam family and uphold the family in your prayers.

  1. My family and my siblings’ families are joining me in expressing our heartfelt condolences to Aunty Sabaratnam’s children and their families in the loss of their beloved mother, mother-in-law, grandmother and great grandmother.

It is an honour to express my thoughts about Aunty Sabaratnam whose loving late husband Mr Sabaratnam taught together with my affectionate mother late Mrs Flora Gunaratnam at Anaipanthy Methodist Mission School, Jaffna.  Furthermore, the relatives of my father’s side are connected through marriage to the relatives of Aunty Sabaratnam, establishing a mutual friendship between both families. Later on, when I was bordered at Rotunda Gardens YWCA in Colpity, Roshana, Aunty Sabaratnam’s one of her daughters came to the same hostel and we ended up sharing a room for nearly two years and became good friends. Through Roshana, I had a chance to meet her younger sister Mohana who resides in Dehiwela. After migrating to Perth, Australia, we had the opportunity to meet aunty Sabaratnam’s other daughters Amirtha, Saratha and Ranjana.

Aunty eventually migrated to Perth and lived here for 16 years.  At that time, I came to know her intimately and we would gather at one of her daughters’ homes occasionally.  She was a valued member of our Tamil Christian Congregation, and her profound understanding of the Bible was truly commendable. Later stages of her life, she moved to Sri Lanka permanently to live with her youngest daughter Mohana and lived in Colombo for a considerable period of time until she became ill and frail. Her strong determination and will power made her a truly remarkable and a beautiful lady.  She was blessed with many grandchildren and great grandchildren.  Let us praise and thank the Lord for blessing her with a long and satisfying life.  May her beautiful soul rest in eternal peace.

“My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.” (Psalm 73:26).
