Dr (Mrs). Gowri Manohari Ravirajan (nee Subramaniam): NHS, London, United Kingdom, (MBBS, Jaffna University, Sri Lanka) and alumna of Chundikuli Girls’ College called to eternity on 30 April 2025.

Dearly beloved wife of Dr. T. Ravirajan, devoted mother of Dr. Ragulan and loving mother-in-Law of Dr. Majura.

Adored daughter of late Mankayakarasi and late Dr. Saravanamuthu Subramaniam and cherished sister of Paranthaman, Dhanajeyan and Shanthakumar (all deceased).

Doted granddaughter of late Sivakolunthu and late Gate Mudaliyar Muthuthambi of Anaipanthi, Jaffna.

Please uphold Gowri and her family in your prayers & poojas. May her soul attain Moksha. Om Shanthi!

Model student every school would love to have

(A tribute to Gowri Manohari by her classmates from Chundikuli Girls’ College, Jaffna, Sri Lanka).

We were heartbroken to hear about the passing of our dear classmate who was called to rest too soon. Memories are flowing in our minds of Gowri Manohari Subramaniam, popularly known as Gowri at CGC.

Gowri joined CGC from kindergarten up to GCE Advanced Level examinations. Over the thirteen years of her primary and secondary education, Gowri studied with many girls, and some of them continued with her to the Medical College as well. Our earliest recollections of Gowri are as quiet and well-mannered, diligent, and outstanding student. She would always be in the top 2 ranks in each grade throughout her school days.

Gowri would come to school from Anaipanthi in a black Morris Minor driven by her father, Dr. S. Subramaniam. Occasionally, one of her older brothers would be her chauffeur. The word ‘neatness’ comes to mind, whether it was her uniform or her hair. Gowri had very long hair, always parted in the middle, plaited to the bottom and tied with a ribbon.  She also wore a tiny black “pottu” on her forehead.

There were 4 Gowrie’s in our cohort and Gowri Manohari was remembered as Mudaliyar Muthuthambi’s granddaughter. The late Gate Mudaliyar Muthuthambi was well associated with our college, delivering messages at our school assembly or represented at the Prizegiving guest list.

Gowri was also a very pleasant, humble, gentle soul. She had a calming effect on her peers. We had never seen her getting into trouble with any girls or with teachers. Apart from her bright academic brain she was also methodical. Good at anything she touched, whether it was handwork, painting or needle work.  Some of us were clumsy and made our uniforms soiled with clay, water colour or even blue ink from the fountain pen – but we never saw Gowri with even a single splatter on her immaculate white uniform. She was also particular in keeping all the pleats of her uniform intact.

Gowri has also participated in PT competitions for her faction Page house and also dancing for the school musical production of “Zurika the Gypsy maid”.  She has participated in speech competitions and won many. For many years, Gowri has been chosen as a class monitor. During her advanced levels, she was elected as a prefect for the college.

One of our memorable events was our excursion to Anuradhapura in our 7th grade, during 1970.  We never ever imagined that the photos taken on that trip would reconnect all of us half a century later via social media and now we have a WhatsApp group with nearly 50 members. It is that same group that broke the sad news of Gowri’s departure.

Gowri continued her tertiary studies at the Jaffna Medical College along with one or two of her classmates. She was selected to enter the Peradeniya Medical Faculty but opted to attend the Jaffna Medical College.  Gowri was one of the 70 medical students in the inaugural batch of University of Jaffna.

Dr. Gowri undertook her medical internship at the Point Pedro base hospital during 1984 and a few years later moved to the United Kingdom. She did  her Master of Science studies at the Imperial College of London. Gowri then worked at NHS, United Kingdom, until her last days.  Gowri is married to Dr. C.T. Ravirajan and blessed with a son who is also a medical professional.

When social media contacts aided us to create a WhatsApp group for our cohorts, Gowri joined us but remained a silent partner in the group. Despite her busy schedule, she had kept in contact with her close friends either in UK, Sydney or in the USA. She showed much care for her friends affected by COVID pandemic and other illnesses by being in regular personal contact with them.

We are saddened to hear that Gowri is no more but are also proud that one such illustrious student marched forward through the passages of our halls and buildings of CGC and beyond the shores of Indian Ocean.

At this juncture we would like to extend our deepest condolences to her husband Dr. Ravirajan and son Dr. Ragulan.

We remember, we honour and we carry you in our hearts, dear Gowri. The memories we made will never be forgotten. May your soul Rest in Peace.

Mrs. Mary Sama Devanayagam (Nee Sankarapillai ) (1942 -2025) திருமதி மேரி சமா தேவநாயகம்

Mrs. Mary. Sama Devanayagam, retired Co-Vice Principal of Chundikuli Girls College, Jaffna, passed away in Toronto, Canada, on March 15, 2025, at the age of 83 years. May her soul rest in peace.

Below is an excerpt from the Centenary Magazine written by student Dileeni Spencer. Magazine was published to commemorate the Centenary of Chundikuli Girls’ College Jaffna. (1896 – 1996)

Personalities : Mrs.M.S.Devanayagam (page 110)

It is with great pleasure that I write this article of appreciation to my teacher and former Co-Vice Principal Mrs. M.S.Devanayagam. She started her career in Chundikuli as an assistant teacher in 1971 and through sheer hard work and loyalty she was elevated to the post of Co-Vice Principal in 1993.She was unassuming, smartly dressed and moved freely with both staff and students. Mrs. Devanayagam’s forte was teaching General Science and Zoology in particular.

I first encountered this lady on a personal basis when she walked into our year 9 classroom to teach science. And it was my good fortune that I was under Mrs. Devanayagam’s stewardship for the next six years as my science teacher till I left school after my advanced level.

Her way of teaching was quite different from other teachers. She would always insist that we read and understand our study materials ourselves before she would explain the relevant portion. Though I found this a bit tiresome at that time, now as a university student I’m quite grateful to her for encouraging us to read and comprehend our lessons by ourselves. She would always recommend us to read other books related to the subject matter. Also she would make it a point to use the English equivalent of any technical terms we came across in Science. This benefited me greatly in my further studies. She firmly believed that theory without practical knowledge was useless and hence our science classes became alive as we explored many secrets in science. Even though she was averse to dust she did not hesitate to use chalk frequently to explain things more clearly.

Mrs Devanayagam was pleasant, courteous and had a flair for pleasing her peers. Always dressed smartly with a smile playing on her lips she would move around quite confidently carrying out her duties. As the sectional head of the Science stream it was a treat watching her organizing quiz programmes and discussions enthusiastically.

It often surprised us students how Mrs.Devanayagam found time to involve herself  in all school activities from morning to evening and still run a home with a husband and three children. She was well versed in music and this talent She passed on to her children. Mrs.Devanayagam was always there to give a patient and sympathetic hearing to her students. Yet she never hesitated to call a spade and spade.

Mrs. Devanayagam served our Alma Mater faithfully for well over twenty years. She took a premature retirement due to the unsettled conditions in the North and emigrated to devote more time with her family. May God’s hand guide and protect her and bless her with a peaceful and contented retirement.
