  1. A Tribute to Eng. Rasaratnam Muthuratnanandan from Jesuthasan Amalendran, Chief Engineer

A Visionary Leader and Pioneer of Progress.

Eng. Rasaratnam Muthuratnanandan passed away on 28.09.2024. He served as the Deputy General Manager (Northern Province) of the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) and made significant contributions to the organization, even during challenging times. In addition to his service to the CEB, he played a key role in the Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka – Vadakkin Chapter (IESL-VC), where his contributions will always be remembered.

Eng. Muthuratnanandan also played a crucial role in society, particularly in the efforts to establish the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Jaffna. Though earlier attempts to start the faculty faced various setbacks, the final push that led to its creation was supported by the IESL-VC under his leadership. He was personally involved in ensuring the successful establishment of the Faculty of Engineering, University of Jaffna, which now stands as a well-established institution with modern laboratory facilities. He was the driving force behind this achievement from the IESL Vadakkin Chapter.

Supporting the establishment of the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Jaffna was a significant challenge in those days. After the conflict ended in 2009, a group of engineers, along with professors from the University of Jaffna, began working towards the development of the Faculty of Engineering. Political leaders also raised the issue in their public addresses, adding momentum to the cause. A pivotal meeting took place on 16th July 2010 at the Dean’s office of the Science Faculty, University of Jaffna. Eng. R. Muthuratnanandan, Prof. A. Atputharajah (now Vice-Chancellor of the University of Vavuniya), myself (Assistant Secretary of IESL-VC at the time), and Prof. V.P. Sivanathan paid several visits to meet with Prof. R. Kumaravadivel, Dean of the Faculty of Science, and Prof. K. Kandasamy. This was followed by another meeting with the Vice Chancellor, Prof. N. Shanmugalingam.

Eng. Muthuratnanandan understood the necessity of a professional body like the IESL-VC, which needed to contribute to the development of the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Jaffna. Through this, people would be educated, their knowledge enhanced, and ultimately contribute to the development of the country.

In conclusion, Eng. R. Muthuratnanandan’s contributions to the CEB, the IESL-VC, and society were immense and timely.

Eng. Rasaratnam Muthuratnanandan was a true engineer who demonstrated all his capabilities to junior engineers and made significant contributions to our society. I am sharing a few photos from those days to help us reflect on his time with us.

His remains will lie at Lotus Hall, Jayaratne Funeral Parlour, from 9:00 am to 8:00 pm on the 1st of October. The funeral service will be held on the 2nd of October at 2:00 pm, with the funeral procession beginning at 3:30 pm to the Borella Cemetery for cremation at 4:00 pm.

    Rest in peace, Sir.

    J. Amalendran

    M-6982.

Chief Engineer (Commercial), Ceylon Electricity Board.
