Dr. Sinnadurai Jeyaratnam Wilson (Jeya) :  Formerly of Sri Lanka and Singapore and later in Sydney Australia, entered peacefully into his Father’s House on Sunday, 23 January 2022.

Dearly beloved husband of Silojini (Nee Thambithurai – formally of Station Road, Chavakachcheri), loving father of Tharshini Joseph (Germany) and Prakash (Sydney), father-in-law of Gerry Joseph and Diana, doting grandfather of Serena, Isabel, Nicholas, Lianna, Dravid and Daya.

Cherished second son of late John Alfred Sinnadurai & Lizzie (Araly, Sri Lanka), loving son-in-law of late Joseph Thambithurai & Gnanasoundary (Chavakachcheri), much loved brother of Stanley Sinnadurai (Perth), Flora Vijiaraj (Sydney), Victor Sinnadurai (Sydney), Watson Sinnadurai (Melbourne), Walter Sinnadurai (Sydney) and Robert Sinnadurai (Adelaide) and much-loved cousin and uncle of many.

SJ Wilson was born in Bentong, Malaysia and studied at Jaffna College, Sri Lanka. A distinguished old boy of Jaffna College went on to complete his Maths undergraduate and postgraduate studies at the University of Colombo, Sri Lanka. He was a tenured Professor at the National University of Singapore for more than four decades and has inspired many students. He will be fondly remembered by his cherished friends and students across the globe.

To celebrate the life of Dr. SJ Wilson, a Thanksgiving Service will be held in Magnolia Chapel, Macquarie Park Crematorium, Sydney, Australia, on Saturday, 5 February 2022 at 10:50am (Sydney time) with viewing at 10:15am.

Below is an excerpt of the tribute written by Stanley Sinnadurai (Wilson’s oldest brother) and read by Victor Sinnadurai.

Good morning/afternoon family and friends,

I’m Stanley Sinnadurai from Perth the eldest child of the late Mr and Mrs John Alfred Sinnadurai. Sadly, due to Covid-19 restrictions, my family and I cannot pay our last respects personally to my second brother Wilson and Uncle Wilson. I would like to thank my sister-in-law, Baba, for giving me the honour to share a few words about my brother. I would also like to thank my brother, Victor, for reading this tribute.

The first chapter of Wilson’s, life began on the 5th of August 1938 in Bentong Malaysia. After the second world war, the Malay government introduced mandatory military service for males over the age of 15. Due to compulsory rule, my mother decided to move us to Sri Lanka then Ceylon, leaving my father in Malaysia., We moved with our grandparents in Jaffna on the 8th of March 1949, and later our family moved to Vaddukoddai (Sri Lanka).

Wilson began his early education at Jaffna College, where he excelled in all areas of his education, but particularly talented in mathematics. Wilson surrounded himself with equally gifted friends in mathematics at college. If he had problem in maths and his friends were also unable to resolve, he would seek assistance from people who were deemed mentally unstable but had brilliant maths brains in his town. Once, he decided that it was best to buy a cup of tea for them so they could assist him and his friends to resolve their maths problem.

Wilson was a sleepwalker when he was quite young. Our mother kept the front door key in a jar of cold water to prevent Wilson opening the door, hoping the cold water would wake him up. Once our mother sought assistance from a native “doctor” for Wilson’s sleepwalks. The “doctor” who had a very long white beard, came to check Wilson’s sleepwalking one night. Soon he did confirm the issue, because Wilson in his sleep, has started to play with “doctor’s” long beard.

Wilson also excelled in basketball, however, his coach discouraged Wilson from taking up basketball, not because of his height, but because Wilson was all skin and bone with no muscles. The coach was concerned that Wilson may incur injuries during play, and he would be liable. However, our mum continued to encourage Wilson to play basketball. As a result, Wilson continued his passion for basketball throughout his university days and won many awards. But from all accounts, Wilson never sustained any injuries.

Wilson continued his gift for mathematics by undertaking a maths degree at the University of Colombo. Wilson finished his degrees with the highest possible honours. However, due to the political situation in Sri Lanka, he had to seek employment in another country.

Thus began his second chapter in Singapore, where he married an elegant, beautiful and extremely dedicated young lady by the name of Miss Sulogini Thambithurai on the 12 of July 1967. Both Wilson and Sulogini were blessed with two children, a beautiful daughter named Tharshini, and a handsome young son named Prakash.

While he was in Singapore, Wilson and his family were extremely supportive, both financially and emotionally to both sides of the family, and he was instrumental in matching me and my wife together.  So, Wilson was not only a talented basketball player, but also a match-making maths Professor!  Wilson had the world at his feet, but his feet were always firmly planted on the ground as a simple man with a very simple life.

On his final chapter, Wilson moved to Sydney, Australia to enjoy his retirement and to be closer to his siblings. Even though I was on the other side of the country, Wilson and I kept in regular touch, and we enjoyed our phone conversations. Wilson’s health declined over the past few years, but his sense of humour and love for life was always in full display, as he continued his mantra of “simple man” “simple life”. I would like to thank Baba for the enormous physical and mental sacrifices she has made over the years to take care of my brother. Only her support and encouragement has given my brother a quality of life, to enjoy to the fullest till the very last moment.

In closing, if I had to summarise Wilson’s life and legacy, he was a genius in every sense of the word. He was very caring, fun-loving brother, devoted husband, loving father, father-in-law and doting grandfather. He was a dear uncle to all his nieces and nephews and a great friend to many people all around the globe.

Wilson, may you rest in peace my brother, we shall meet again in paradise until we meet again goodbye my loving brother! You will be missed dearly by your family and friends. Rest in Peace.

Baba, Tharshini and Prakash our deepest condolences and our thoughts and prayers are with you at this very difficult and dark time.

Joseph Sellathurai Rajaratnam:  (Retired Teacher, Hartley College, Point Pedro, Jaffna)

Born and raised in Aaliyavalai, Uduthurai and lived in Bethany, Beach road, Point Pedro was called to be with the Lord in Jaffna on Thursday, 25 November 2021.

Beloved husband of late Cecilia Gunamany, cherished father of Rajini (Canada), Rajaseelan (USA), Rajabalan (Singapore), Rajaselvam(Canada) and Rajakaruna (USA),  loved father-in-law of Quintus, Nilmini, Rucklanthi, Arunika and Maithili, adored grandfather of Daniel, Anna, Jonathan, Cheryl, Anisha, Andrew and Elena and great-grandfather of Noah.

JS Rajaratnam, a graduate from Calcutta University (India) was a mathematics teacher at the Hartley College, Point Pedro since 1961. He was a well respected teacher and was fondly remembered as “Rajaratnam Master” among his students. Master has been a dedicated teacher and a strict disciplinarian who was well known for his weekly tests. Many of his students honoured and respected the great teacher after the GCE Ordinary exams results. Rajaratnam master has tutored many students of Vadamaradchchi and Hartley even after his retirement.

JS Rajaratnam was an elder of  The Methodist Church (Point Pedro) and Kaddaiveli  Circuit. He was a also a senior advisor and a local preacher of Point Pedro Methodist Church and was the Director of the “Nesakam” Church. His stewardship has left a beacon of light to the congregation of the the Methodist Churches in Vaddamarachi region.

JS. Rajaratnam will be missed and fondly remembered by his relatives, friends and students across the globe. Greater than the sorrow of his loss is the joy that he spread during his life, as he loved and helped all. His integrity and hard work continue to inspire those who knew him.

Thanksgiving Service

To celebrate the life of JS Rajaratnam, a Thanksgiving Service was held on Friday 25  November  at  the Point Pedro Methodist Church, followed by the interment at the Methodist Church Cemetery.

Please uphold Rajaratnam family in your prayers and pray for their dear Aiya’s soul to be in eternal repose with Jesus.

Rev. Richard Joseph Jeganathan (Jega) formerly of Chundikuli, Jaffna, Sri Lanka and later in Melbourne, Australia went to be with Jesus on 04 November 2021.

Beloved husband of Shantha (Nee Subramaniam), loving father of Ashok and Bindu, affectionate grand father of Joshua and Edward, loving brother of late Samuel Inbanathan, late Manohari Anandarajah, Padmini Jayaseelan (Adelaide) and Edwin Vimalanathan (U.K.), brother-in-law of Rev S.N. Sugunanathan (Adelaide), Rev Dr S. Jebanesan (former CSI Bishop of Jaffna), late Dr S.Jeyaseelan (Adelaide), Rev S, Manobavan (Brisbane) and S. Sugumar (Canberra).

Jega was an old boy of St John’s College, Jaffna and represented the 1st Eleven Cricket Team during 1962 and 63.  He qualified in Mechanical engineering in The U.K before returning to Sri Lanka, where he worked at the Paddy Marketing Board as a Mechanical Engineer. Jega migrated to Australia in 1982 and worked as a Design Engineer for the Melbourne Water. Later he did his Theology at The Presbyterian Theological College in Melbourne and served as a Pastor at The Footscray Presbyterian Church.

Thanksgiving Service:

To celebrate the life of Rev. R. J. Jeganathan, a Thanksgiving Service was held on Monday 8th Nov at The Presbyterian Church, Hawthorn Victoria, the church where Jeganathan and his family worshipped since their migration in 1982.

Rev. Richard Joseph Jeganathan will be missed and fondly remembered by his relatives, members of his Church and friends across the globe.

 Tributes from Jega’s mates

Classmate from St.Johns College, Jaffna

I first came to know Jega in 1958, when we were classmates at St Johns college Jaffna in the 4th Form ( Year 9). He told me that he was interested in cricket , I was glad to hear that because we had something in common. We started playing soft ball cricket with various clubs in Jaffna. I vividly remember attending his father’s funeral in 1960.

Jaga lived down Swarts lane at Chundikuli, which was very close to my residence. Jega played for the college 2nd Eleven in 1960 and later represented the 1st Eleven in 1962 and 1963. He was a good left hand batsman with a sound defense.

In the mid 80’s both of us left Sri Lanka due to the unsettled conditions in the island. Jega chose to go to Melbourne while I have settled in Sydney. Whenever I go to Melbourne, I would contact Jega who was living in the suburb of Burwood.

Some years later he told me that, he was following a course in Theology in the hope of working as a priest in a church in Melbourne. Having worked for more than 10 years as a priest Jega retired in 2017. Sadly, Jega passed away after a brief illness in a Nursing Home in Melbourne on Thursday November 4th.

He will be ever remembered.

Puvanendran Sithamparapillai : It is with a heavy heart that the Sithamparapillai family announce that Puvanendran Sithamparapillai (also known as Rajan and Puvi) was called to rest on 31 October 2021 in Denton, Texas, USA.

Beloved husband of Thayalam (nee Amirthanayagam of Tellipallai), much loved father of Patrick and Dr. Sarah, loving son of late NS Sithamparapillai (Station Master, Ceylon Government Railways) and late Saraswathi, cherished youngest brother of late Pusparaja Sithamparapillai , late Pushparani Thirrunavukkarasu (Rani), Pushpadevi Sithamparapillai (Ranji, Sri Lanka), Pushpamirtham Sabaratnam (Baba, Sri Lanka), Pushparagam Alagaratnam (Mano, Sri Lanka), late Pushpalayam Sivagurunathan (Gnanam), Sarojini  Subramaniam (Pillai, Canada) and Stephen Puvendran (Indran, Canada).  Rajan will be missed by many of his nieces and nephews and many of his grand nieces and nephews across the globe.

Rajan was born in Chundikuli, Jaffna, studied at St Johns’ College and worked at the Bank of Ceylon (Colombo) before he migrated to Canada and then to Texas, USA.  

Please uphold Sithamparapillai family in your prayers and pray for Rajans’s dear soul to be in eternal repose with Jesus.

To celebrate the life of Mr. Puvanendran Sithamparapillai, a Thanksgiving Service will be held on Friday, 5 November 2021 at 10. 30 am at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church 2255, N. Bonnie Brae St, Denton, Texas 76207.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, family is kindly requesting all the attendees to follow all the Government regulations and protocols that are currently in place.

Samuel Ebenezar Manoharan (Mohan): Formerly of Point Pedro, Jaffna, Sri Lanka called to be with the Lord on 23 October 2021, London, United Kingdom.

Beloved husband of Clotilda (Mano), adoring father of Talitha Dushiyanthie (Dushy), loving son of  late W.N.S Samuel (former Principal of Hartley College) & late Inpamani Samuel,  much loved eldest brother of Dr.S.D. Vasikaran (Perth), S.G. Kirubakaran (Perth) and S.T. Prabaharan (UK).  Manoharan will be missed and fondly remembered by his relatives and friends across the globe.

Manoharan was the Chief Financial Officer of Consumers International (UK) , was the Head Prefect of Hartley College and the former President of the Hartley College Old Boys’ Association- London (HCPPA-UK).

To celebrate the life of Manoharan Samuel, a Thanksgiving Service will be held on Thursday, 11 November  at  All Saints Church, Woodford Wells, 1G8 0NH. Please be seated at 12. 45 pm.

Hilda Sugirthamathy Ratnam (Retired Teacher) Formerly of Love Lane, Uduvil, Jaffna was embraced by God on 26 September 2021 in Melbourne, Australia.

Dearly beloved wife of late Prince Ratnam, adored mother of Godwin Theepam (Melbourne), Renita Shiranee (London), Shaun Prithee (Singapore) and Sherina Dharmini (Melbourne), loved mother-in-law of Jeyantha, late Sritharan, Mary Kumutha and Sugirthakumar, cherished grandma and precious great grandma.

Much loved daughter of late Mr & Mrs Thampiyappa and treasured sister of Patricia Jeyathilake, Stanley, Kingsley, Wesley and Anasley.

Loving Hilda will be remembered and cherished forever.

Thanksgiving Service : Due to COVID restrictions in Melbourne, family will be having a private Thanksgiving Service to celebrate the life of their dear mother. Please note that extra visitors (other than the family of 10 ) will incur hefty fine for breaking the law.

Mrs. Chandra Navaratnam (23.11.1932 — 13.06.2020)

Our mother, Chandra Navaratnam nee Rajasingham, hailed from a lineage of Priesthood, the Reverend Sam Morse being her Great Grand Father. She was the 2nd daughter of Charles and Ranee Rajasingam, and sister of the late Ranita Thavam and the late Raju Rajasingham.  She was an old girl of CMS Ladies College, Colombo, and during the World War II years, studied at Chundikuli Girls College Jaffna, before returning to Ladies’ College to finish her secondary education.  

During the 60’s, our family moved from Colombo to Jaffna, as Dad, who was a Station Master in the Railway, was transferred to Jaffna. Five months into his new assignment, Dad died of a severe heart attack. Mother decided to stay on and raise the children in Jaffna. It was the grace of God that provided her the fortitude and the will to courageously continue to raise her children. Through the ensuing years, she was able to juggle her parental responsibilities with her teaching workload at St. Johns College, as well as giving after school lessons of piano, speech and drama.

Mother involved herself in Church activities as well, accepting the offer from the then vicar at St. John’s Church, the Rev. Raju Coomaraswamy to be the regular organist. She was already an accomplished musician attached to the Trinity College of Music Speech and Drama, London, when she started giving piano lessons at home. For some time, our living room was used as one of the examination centres for Jaffna. Her former students will also remember the annual picnics that she organized.

She so admirably handled the dual role of mother and father, a picture of health and a pillar of strength to all of us. From our younger days she instilled in our minds the importance of leading a Christian life. Her favourite quote was ‘The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom’. She was also very well versed  in child psychology.  Never raised her hand on us for any naughty or careless deeds. Instead, she would make it a point to teach us where we went wrong, to make us realize our mistakes.

She used a lot of proverbs and teachings throughout our childhood days, which really helped us siblings go through adolescence.  She ensured we were well provided in all necessities. I can still remember how meticulously she organized our meals, always making something different for dinner. April & August school holidays were spent in Colombo with our relatives. December holidays were always spent at home, as all of us siblings took part in Christmas activities.  Mother was the organist for the church as well as the school carol services, while we also sang in the choir.

Mother was a real source of knowledge on any topic under the Sun, and so much so that was known as Dr. Navaratnam in the family circle. She was so energetic and active all the time, a pillar of strength, courageous, humble, simple and fun loving too, and more than anything, she led a selfless, sacrificial life throughout. The beauty of her life was that she simply enjoyed all what she did with a cheerful heart.  

We will also remember her for her resilience and resourcefulness, and we are ever grateful to God for having blessed us with one of the ‘BEST MOTHERS IN THE WORLD’ or rather, THE BEST.

Kanapathipillai Nalliah Yogasingham Maurice (KNY Maurice)

Formerly of Chundikuli and Colombo and then in Toronto, passed away in Canada on Monday June 07, 2021, aged 86. Maurice entered his eternal home peacefully after a short illness.

Loving son of late K. G. Nalliah (Station Master, Ceylon Government Railways) & late Gnanammah Nalliah of Chundikuli, loving son-in-law of late Mudaliyar Murugesu Chellappah & late Victoria Arulammah of Karaveddy, beloved husband of Lily Pavalamalar (Retired teacher, Sri Lanka), cherished  father of  Premini Kabilamany (USA), Nilanthy Gnanasekaram (Canada), loving father-in-law of Caleb Kabilamany (USA) and Ivon Gnanasekaram (Canada), adored grandfather of  Sangeetha & Timothy Gnaneswaran (USA), Sinthu Kabilamany (USA), Nathan and Joel Gnanasekaram (Canada), doting  great-grandfather of Judah, Lucas and Norah (USA) and loving brother of Kamala Arulnayagam(UK)  late Kingsley (Sri Lanka),  Primy  Rajadevi  Anthonipillai (Sri Lanka),  Girty Gnanadevi Hunt  (Sri Lanka), Balasingham (USA) and Rajasingham (Sri Lanka).

Maurice was born in Chundikuli and studied at St. John’s College, Jaffna.  He was a talented athlete and during his senior years captained the Cricket, Football and Athletic teams and was the Senior Prefect of his alma mater in 1956.

He pursued his higher studies at Madras Christian College in South India and completed his training in Applied Engineering Science at Victoria Jubilee Technological Institute in Bombay and also a former trainee Engineer at TATA Textiles Mills. He started his career as Industrial Production Manager at National Textile Corporation, Veyangoda, Sri Lanka. Later he joined the Institute of Engineering Technology as a Lecturer and Director of Sports at the Jaffna College, Vaddukkodai. He also had a short stint as a science teacher at his alma mater.

Maurice has been a volunteer at Red Cross Society and YMCA (Jaffna and Colombo). He  migrated to Canada in 1995 and enjoyed life with his family and friends and continued his contribution to the community. Even though a failing heart took him away from this world, his loving heart left a beacon of light, leading all whom he has met to his Saviour, Jesus Christ.

Maurice அண்ணை, uncle, மாமா will be missed and fondly remembered by his cousins, nieces, nephews and grandchildren across the globe.

” I worked with Maurice (we call him Maurice uncle, though he was more like a friend to me) at Jaffna College Institute of Vaddukoddai.
We share the same alma mater.
Maurice uncle always walk smart and he has a captivating smile. When I meet with some of the Christian trainees to pray and sing, he would also join in. He made the coarse stony field – used as grounds by us – as a playground within a week, so that we could have our first cricket match against Jaffna College staff. I cherish good memories of working with him, and we have also cycled together all the way from Jaffna to Vaddukoddai in those days, daily, me always struggling to stay abreast with him. He was an inspiration to many of us.

My heartfelt condolences go out to Maurice uncle’s family. We will surely miss the presence of a truly lovable and kind person. Thanks to Jeyendran anna for sharing the family connections , it is sad that I have met him so many times in different locations including Sri Lanka but never knew the relationship. I am truly sorry for the loss especially to Solomons clan. He has done a lots of charitable works and his support towards SJC . Our uncle will be missed and he will never be forgotten.

Mrs. Thavamany Rathinasingham (Retired Teacher), formerly of Urumpirai, Jaffna, Sri Lanka was called to be with the Lord on 1 May 2021 in Perth, Western Australia.

Dearly beloved wife of late N.S. Rathinasingham (Retired Principal and Vice Principal of Jaffna Central College, Sri Lanka); loving mother of Lydia Shantha Mahendran (Epsom, UK), Jasmine Jeyantha Richards (Perth, Australia), Jeremy Thava Chelvam (Perth, Australia) and David Thavasuthan (Canberra, Australia); cherished mother-in-law of  late Daniel Mahendran, Michael Richards, Jayantha Chelvam and Carolyn Galloway; adored grandmother of  Joel, Noel, Naomi, Jason, Dinesh and  Nishan and doting great grandmother of Ethan, Ezra, Liam, Samuel, Dylan, Lewis, Joseph and Rowan.

Much loved sister of late Thavaratnam (Toronto), late Rajaratnam (Colombo), late Pavalamalar (Urumpirai), late Moorthy (Badulla);  adored sister-in-law of Meena (Toronto), late Rani (London), late Balasingham (Melbourne), late Raajam (Toronto) and late Malar (Pandatharippu), Ruby (Melbourne), late Blanchard (Torronto) and late Rasiah.

She was a much adored and well respected teacher at Urumpirai Hindu College for over 30 years, then migrating to Western Australia in 1986 where she enjoyed a retired life with family and friends.

Loving Mrs. Rathinasingham will be missed and fondly remembered by her relatives, friends and students across the globe. Greater than the sorrow of her loss is the joy that she spread during her life, as she loved and helped all. Her wisdom and love will continue to guide each one of us throughout our lives. Her integrity and hard work continue to inspire those who knew her.
