Raj was born in Chunnakam, Jaffna, Sri Lanka, in 1941. He came as a foreign exchange student to Australia in the sixties and completed his Bachelor of Dental Science at the University of Western Australia. Dr. Raj was admitted to the WA Dental Board in 1968 and practiced in Perth until his retirement.
Fondly remembered as Dr. Raj or Raj was a happy, pleasant person who has contributed much to the growing Perth Tamil community in the 80’s and 90’s. Raj has provided dental treatments free of charge to many new migrants and refugees.
Raj was a founding member of the Tamil Association of Western Australia. The Association met at “Tamil Illam” (Tamil House) on Brisbane Street, Northbridge for their activities. He has been the president of the Tamil Association many times and was an ardent supporter in raising funds for the affected families during the Sri Lankan war through “Dinner Dances” and “Curry Nites”.
Dr. Raj was also a key member of the Hindu temple committee to build the Arulmigu Bala Murugan temple in Western Australia. The Bala Murugan temple was the first Hindu temple built in Western Australia.
Raj and Chelli were also involved in the inaugural Tamil Christian Carol Service held under the umbrella of the Tamil Association at the Curtin University in 1985.
The couple were active members of Sri Lankan Tamil Welfare Society and later it was named as Sri Lankan Tamil Association. Few times Raj has been the president of the Sri Lankan association as well.
Fun-loving Raj and Chelli’s house was always open for families to walk in. Dr. Raj will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by his loving family, relatives, and friends near and far.
Please uphold Rajagopalan family in your poojas and prayers during their grievance.
